Neethlingshof Merlot 1996

It is deep ruby red, clear and brilliant. On the nose, an intense red berry character dominates, with oak aromas well evident in the background. The palate follows the nose, and is medium-bodied, with good berry-fruit flavours and a lengthy aftertaste. A wine with remarkable softness yet with excellent maturation potential. Enjoy this elegant, flavoursome wine on its own, or as the perfect accompaniment to rich stews and roasts. Serve at room temperature (16 - 18°Celsius).

in the vineyard : The classical French Merlot (clone MO 192), from vineyards planted in 1986 on deep gravelly soils, which provide optimum drainage, situated on the highest points on the farm, and grafted on resistant rootstocks (Richter 99) selected for the specific growing conditions.

about the harvest: Relatively small yield (8 tons per hectare), hand-picked at optimum ripeness.

in the cellar : The grapes are then crushed, destalked and fermented on the skins for 7 days. After completion of malolactic fermentation, the wine is matured in a mixture of small and large French oak for 8 months, then filtered and bottled.
