The Family Collection Riesling 2013

A lovely fresh floral, quince, lime and spanspek nose, while the sugar and acid are well matched. The lees contact has fattened the mouthfeel and the wine leaves a pleasing crisp fruity aftertaste.

From: Family Collection wines are our reserve bottlings, unique small lots bottled for family, friends and loyal customers.

in the vineyard : One of our Sauvignon blanc growers in Elgin has a young Riesling vineyard which produced its 3nd crop in 2012. Not only is great Riesling perhaps the world’s best white grape but in South Africa it is an unusual variety, so a perfect fit for our Family Collection range. The first vintage we made, 2012, found many converts and followers and this one is following in those footsteps. It’s been very exciting for me.

about the harvest: Grapes picked on the morning of 20 February.

in the cellar : Grapes were transported to Devon Valley in refrigerated truck, immediately destalked and crushed. Juice protected from oxidation as far as possible by the use of dry ice and ascorbic acid. Settled, then fermented cold with Heiligenstein yeast (from Austria) over about 6 weeks. Yeast inactivated by cooling at a residual sugar of about 8g/l. Wine left on yeast lees for about 6 months. Only 4074 bottles made.
