Boschendal Jean Le Long Semillon 2000

This is an excellent example of the potential of Semillon in South Africa. It has piquant passion fruit aromas with hints of oak. The concentrated well-balanced palate also has rich vanilla and citrus flavours.

ageing : This wine has an ageing potential of at least 5 years.

in the vineyard : 100% Semillon, from a vineyard 400m above sea level. The unique micro-climate allows the grapes to ripen slowly, thus concentrating and developing the flavours in the berries. Soil types are mainly Hutton and Tukulu.

about the harvest: Random samples of grapes on each block were tasted regularly to ensure that they were picked at optimum flavour levels. The grapes were hand-picked in the cool of the early morning. The bins were only partially filled to prevent crushing of the berries and oxidation of the juice during transport to the cellar. The yield from this vineyard was 2 tonnes per hectare.

in the cellar : The grapes were crushed and allowed no skin contact. Vinification took place in barrels, 50% French Oak and 50% American second-fill barrels. The wine was matured in these barriques for 8 months.
