Flagstone Resolute 166 Chardonnay 2000

On the nose, orange marmalade, caramel, cinnamon, nutmeg and naartjie. This intense combination of scents moves through a caramel, butterscotch, orange palate to finish with lemon cinnamon pancakes. Fresh, lively and morish.

in the vineyard : Our Resolute is always crafted from a single vineyard of the unusual 166 Chardonnay clone grown in the Kuils River Hills overlooking False Bay. This is a more floral, Muscat-scented Chardonnay selection than the typical Chardonnay clones. On the palate the clonally-specific aromas are echoed by juicy citrus fruit characters. We always get naartjie (a South African mandarine), orange and lemon.

in the cellar : The 166 clone is often blended with other Chardonnay clones to lift the fruit character of the blend. We decided we liked it so much on its own that we would let it speak for itself. What surprised us was how well it takes to wood fermentation and maturation. Instead of the Muscat scents being lost, they intensified in barrel.

The 166 barrel lots always give the most exciting fermentation aromas and flavours and when Crush starts wearing us down we just need a quick barrel tasting of the 166 to give us a lift. We call it Resolute, because most other winemakers think we should blend it away, and we are determined to let it speak for itself.
