Rouana Shiraz 1999

Beautiful dark colour with healthy bright rim. Intense spicy black berry fruit with toasty sweet vanilla oak aromas which follow through on the palate. Complex herb and pepper flavours add further complexity and textbook Shiraz identity. Gentle refined tannins provide the perfect structure for this deliciously full-bodied wine from an excellent vintage. While suitable for drinking now, it also has excellent cellaring potential of eight to ten years. Best with spicy foods such as a potroast, beef stroganoff, mature cheddar and that South African favourite, biltong.

about the harvest: Winter rains commenced early but by mid-winter the rainfall had dropped dramatically, resulting in an unusually dry winter. Spring came early, but subsequent very cold and rainy weather conditions in November badly affected the budding of the grapes. Cool December conditions resulted in a later than expected start to the vintage. Shortly thereafter temperatures soared and sugar levels rose, producing very healthy, plump ripe berries, resulting in some truly impressive wines of this still underrated variety in the Cape.
