in the vineyard : Planted between 2002 and 2003, on Bokkeveld shale and Table Mountain sand-stone, mostly south facing, 200m above sea-level. The cool maritime climate of the farm results in naturally lower yields – an average of eight to ten tons per hectare.

in the cellar : The young wine is transferred to 225-litre barriques for malolactic fermentation and maturation. After 12 months in 100% new barriques a careful selection is made, the selected barrels are racked and the wine is transferred to second-fill barriques for a further 10 months of maturation. The blending of our Reserve Bordeaux style wine is undertaken with great care, and the best barrels are selected for each blending component. The Five Arches is structured on the five building blocks of Bordeaux, with Cabernet Franc as its capstone. A year of bottle ageing is completed before release.
