A Taste of Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is a noble variety red grape - and is usually deep red in colour, full-bodied, with dark fruit flavours. It arose out of an accidental breeding between a red Cabernet Franc and a white Sauvignon Blanc grape plant - which subsequently has become one of the most planted and popular varieties in the red wine world.

Of course, we have selected 6 Top South African Cabernets for you to try out, and then you can come back and stock up on those you love!

  • Kleine Zalze Vineyard Selection Cabernet Sauvignon: Initially showing quite a robust nose with lots of ripe dark berry fruits giving way to notes of cedar wood and spice. A dense palate which is packed with ripe fruit give one idea to expect a burley heavy wine, however, the fine grained tannins and lively acidity ensure a very elegant palate that dances for a long lingering finish.
  • Stellenrust Cabernet Sauvignon: This wine offers blackcurrant, berry and black cherry flavours with an undertone of mint and mocha, well rounded with elegant tannins and a refreshing acidity leaving good tannic grip
  • Boschendal Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon: The deep, dark ruby colour of this wine offers a promising glint of the intrigue that awaits inside the glass. Aromas of ripe black cherry and cassis, pencil shavings, cigar box accents and spice make an enticing entry, and linger onto the palate, where chalky tannins and a rich, textured mouthfeel also become noticable. A well-structured and powerful wine that offers a new discovery at every sip. While it offers rewarding drinking in its relative youth, this wine will continue to age well and develop more nuance and dimension over time. It is a textbook example of the depth and staying power that makes Stellenbosch Cabernet so appealing for discerning wine lovers.
  • The Roxton Black: The palate expresses the vintage by bringing together the masculine firmness and length of the Cabernet Sauvignon with a juicy fruit core. A seamless integration of oak spice and oak tannin entwined with the Cabernet’s masculinity, adds real depth and complexity to the wine.
  • Landskroon Paul de Villiers Cabernet Sauvignon: The grapes for this wine are carefully selected. Bright ruby colour, earthy aromas together with ripe mulberry and blackcurrant. A vast array of flavours fills the palate.
  • Muratie Martin Melck Cabernet Sauvignon: Anna Catherina’s second name means ‘purity’, a virtue Melck valued, and one that this Simonsberg Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon seeks to express with its concentrated dark fruit (black cherries, berries and plums) underscored by fresh acidity and framed by cedar wood and spice from 18 months in French oak (10% new). Sourced from three different blocks on the estate, it’s opulent yet polished, a wine of integration, balance and great length, true to its terroir just as Melck stayed true to his beliefs.
