We made this wine in memory of my late father Ronnie Melck (1933-1995). He was one of the most respected, revered and pioneering winemakers in the latter half of the 20th Century. A man possessed with a “photographic palette” and a personality larger than life. A person for whom the simple yet honest things in life mattered utmost. This wine pays tribute to him

in the vineyard : The vines are rooted in very deep, north-west facing table mountain, sandstone soil. Gentle destemming done, berries are hand sorted on a sorting table before being crushed and pumped into a classic open fermenter.

about the harvest: The grapes are hand-picked from Low yielding (2,8 Tons /Ha ) vineyards planted in 1974.

in the cellar : Coal soak is done for 3 days. Spontaneous fermentation ensues. Punch downs and pump overs are done on a regular basis. Fermentation temperatures are controlled by stainless steel cooling sheets. Post fermentation maceration is done for 48 hours. Grapes are gently pressed in bag press, wine pumped into New 500 L French Oak barrels where malolactic fermentation ensues. The wine is kept on the healthy lees for 24 months before being bottled unfiltered.

Total production 1200 bottles, individually numbered by hand.
