Boplaas Heritage Red Muscadel 2012

This bright crimson coloured wine, unfurls with layers of cranberry, macerated mulberries, fresh strawberry jam, jasmine, Rooibos and that distinct Muscat-spice; while the palate is full and bright acidity makes for a mouth whetting experience.

Perfectly paired with duck or pork dishes, traditional Cape Malay or Cantonese cuisine and always best served lightly chilled.

in the vineyard : The legacy of Muscadel or Muscat de Frontignan in South Africa dates back to its purported first planting in 1655, with the first Cape wine being crafted there from on 2 February 1659. Our family has intrinsically been attached to the production of Muscadel since the mid-1800's, upon their settling in the Klein Karoo hamlet of Calitzdorp to tend vines & craft wines. The Boplaas Heritage Muscats are crafted according to traditional vinification methods, only in exceptional vintages from select low-yielding vineyard sites and destined for decades of careful cellaring to showcase the wonder of fully mature fortified Muscat. These wines are testament to our winemaking Heritage and to the grape which started it all. The last vintage of Red Muscat bottled by Boplaas prior to this wine, was that from the 1975 harvest.
about the harvest: Hand harvested in the early morning hours...
in the cellar : Extensive crop-reduction on our young block of Red Muscadel resulted in an intensely concentrated, yet miniscule yield of fruit. Hand-harvested in the early morning hours, crushed into lagar and allowed three days of skin contact with intense manual punch-downs, the brief natural ferment halted by fortification and resulting in the complex melange of flavours which typify the Boplaas Heritage Red Muscadel 2012.
