The colour of the wine is brilliant red. The aroma shows hints of wood spice and mint with attractive red berry fruit. On the palate the wine is rich and full with juicy soft tannins ensuring drinkability. It will however mature for up to six years from vintage.

When the market indicated a liking for softer red wine, Villiera was one of the first South African producers to release a single varietal Merlot (in 1989). To this day, it remains our top selling red wine.

about the harvest: In 2020, good, healthy fruit was picked at optimum ripeness - determined by aroma assessment (i.e. maximum fruit intensity).

in the cellar : 60% of the fruit was crushed whilst balance was left as whole berries. The fermentation was natural, in pump over vessels. Pressing was done before dryness. MLF occurred in tank prior to 12 months maturation in 225L oak barrels (of 15% new barrels).
