ageing : This Grenache drinks well in youth but will improve over time, gaining additional complexity for at least five years from vintage.

Lycaon comes from the scientific name for an African wild dog, Lycaon Pictus, and is derived from the Greek word Lycos for a wolf. The label illustration is from a page in an 18th century book on hunting in Southern Africa, a time when painted wolves were common throughout the region.

Painted Wolf Wines supports the conservation of the highly endangered painted wolf (African wild dogs) and the protection of the diminishing wild spaces of Africa, through its donations to the EWT and Tusk.

in the vineyard : This certified single vineyard wine is from a west facing unirrigated hillside vineyard in Wellington. The soil is decomposed granite (Hutton and Glenrosa). The vineyard was planted in 2006.

in the cellar : The grapes whole-bunch fermented in a 5 ton open fermenter with manual punch downs. A few bunches were crushed by booted footstomping. Fermentation was started with wild yeast before some commercial yeast was added to help things along. The wine was matured in barrel and tank to retain both fruit and spice.

Total production 2,600 bottles.
