Meaning of Luna de Miel
Luna de Miel was known as South Africa's million dollar Broodmare in 1986. Purchased in the Argentine in 1982 at a partial dispersal sale from the Perkinses who were forced to sell due to the economic turmoil surrounding the Falkland Island crisis. Luna de Miel has graced Avontuur for 18 years and we were priviledged to have been part of her life and the lives of her progeny. This very special and unique wine has been named after a very treasured and valuable thoroughbreed broodmare who passed away at the age of twenty seven and is buried on Avontuur soil.
in the vineyard : Grapes grown on the more western slopes of the farm where the big canopy assures a well-balanced wine as well as protecting primary fruit flavours. Planted in deep Hutton soils.

about the harvest: The grapes were harvested at 23.8º Balling.

in the cellar : The grapes were pressed and settled for 48 hours and the clear juice directly transferred to new French Oak barrels. Fermented with four different yeast strains and aged on the primarily lees for nine months. Weekly battonage contributed to yeast autolysis, which adds the buttery, yeasty flavours. Malolactic fermentation allowed to take place naturally.
