in the vineyard : Flagship Merlot is harvested from cordon pruned vines at Rheeboksfontein in Malmesbury. Vines are on South facing slope, at an altitude of about 150m above sea level. Sea breezes cool the area down at night. The soils on this farm is red ferric Oakleaf. Suitable for dry-land viticultureas they hold moisture well. The yields of these 10-year-old vines was 7tons/ ha in 2000. Fruit is small and concentrated in flavour and colour.

about the harvest: Harvest date: February 2000

in the cellar : Fermentation has strated in stainless steel tanks being pressed off to complete fermentation and malolactic in barrel. Wine was in Frenck oak barrels for 16 months to give it a classic feel and then bottled without filtration.
