Klein Constantia Shiraz 2001

Deep intensity ruby in colour, opaque at core. A broadly spicy nose of pepper and cloves and vanilla combine well with the characteristic smoky, earthy quality of this wine. Attractive dark fruit flavours are balanced by firm tannins and acidity, leading to a long and spicy finish.

ageing : Approachable now. Will evolve in bottle until 2008.

in the vineyard : Grown on the warm, lower, north-facing slopes of the Klein Constantia vineyards at 70-100m above sea level. Vines benefit from prevailing cool southerly sea breezes during the summer. Soils consist of decomposed Table Mountain granite and are not irrigated.

about the harvest: Grapes were harvested by hand at full phenolic ripeness in March of this warm vintage.

in the cellar : Yields of 6 tons per hectare, ensured optimal fruit concentration. Fermentation took place in rototanks at 26-30°C, with regular rotation ensuring optimum extraction of colour and tannins. The wine was then matured in 50% new 225l American oak barrels for 18 months.
