Simonsig Malan Family Vintners Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2003

Wine Magazine’s Best value Wine Guide 2004 - 3 stars
Deep plum colour. Ripe black cherry flavours supported by a cedary vanilla oak spiciness. Medium body with the unmistakable lead pencil Cabernet influence. A sweet red berry Merlot contribution lingers on the finish which shows a food friendly dryness. Further maturation in the bottle will expose more of the sweet fruit characters.

Best with bredies, potjiekos, and pasta dishes.

ageing : Enjoy in its youth or age for a further 3 years.

in the vineyard : In the seventies this wine started as Simonsig Rooi Tafelwyn (Red Table Wine) and in 1978 Frans Malan christened it Adelberg. For many years Pinotage made up the biggest part of the blend with the balance made up of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. In 1998 the Adelberg packaging was redesigned and the blend changed to Cabernet-Merlot to suit the preference of international consumers. The Malan Family Vintners is made by using the best grapes available in the beautiful Stellenbosch region. Stellenbosch is widely recognised as the top wine region in South Africa.

The effects of our Cabernet Sauvignon planting program over the last few years made a positive impact on the quality of Cabernet Sauvignon this vintage. The quality coming from these young healthy vines is exciting and it is showing a lot of promise for the future. Some of the late ripening Cabernet’s were picked after the rain of 23 March. Fortunately the favourable dry conditions that followed allowed the sugars to get back to 25/25° Balling with deep colour and ripe tannins. Outstanding quality Merlots were produced in 2003. The wines are very concentrated and deeply fruity.
