Stellenrust JJ Handmade Wines Picalot 2005

A real style Cape Blend of 51% Pinotage, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot. Nose shows soft plum and peach flavours with hint of dark berries in the background. Palate filled with ripe fruit - strong Cabernet Sauvignon essence, but still well controlled tannins and ironed out with soft Merlot moccha flavours. This wine is recognised by soft peach berry flavours on the nose coming from the Pinotage, but on the palate the Cabernet and Merlot come forward much stronger. The Picalot is an elegant Cape blend made as an initiator for our one true South African grape Pinotage.

In 2003 we converted an old dairy into a boutique cellar where winemaking works on a gravity enabled process – the grapes come in at the top of the cellar – get crushed with wooden stomps by the women on the farm. Then it ferments naturally at the top of the cellar, where after it flows down with gravity into the second fermentation tank and then eventually with gravity into the barrels at the bottom of the cellar.

In 2004 Stellenrust put an international trademark on Handmade Wines – meaning wines produced without any machinery and in limited amounts.
in the cellar : The Picalot is one of two wines produced under this label – the other is a Merlot. The Picalot is a classical Cape blend consisting of 52% Pinotage, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot aged solely in French oak for about 18 months. By adding up the underlined letters, you can see where the name Picalot comes from.
