Paul Cluver Weisser Riesling 2008

The colour of the 2008 Paul Cluver Riesling shows a beautiful green apple tint. The nose is quite expressive with flavours ranging from Granny Smith apple to lime, citrus peel and lovely floral tones. The palate is perfectly balanced with great play between the naturally retained residual sugar and the acidity. The wine has a great textured mid palate with loads of fruit and a mineral core giving the wine structure and a lingering aftertaste.

What a versatile wine! This is the closest you'll get to a Germanic style, with high acid and floral fruit. Try it with a curry or anything spicy - and don't forget the sushi!! And to try something different, don't be afraid to try this with red meat, esp. kudu carpaccio and beef tartare. But the usual white meat will also be sufficient.

ageing : This wine will amply reward ageing for 6 plus years.

in the vineyard : South Easterly winds often blows cool moist air and many times rain into the Elgin/Grabouw valley. This cool moist weather results into the development of botrytis. Every year we have some botrytis in the Riesling vineyard. This not only allows us to make some great desert wine but also add complexity to our Riesling.

about the harvest: Harvested on 29 February 2008 at 20.1° Brix. The average yield was 2.5 tons/ha.

Due to the botrytis a careful selection was made to ensure that we harvest healthy grapes, further selections are made on the sorting tables at the winery ensure that only a limited amount of clean botrytis grapes are allowed with the healthy uninfected grapes.
