Alto Estate 1996

Cherry red, dry and medium-bodied, it is a masterly blend of the noble varieties Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. Alto Estate has a fascinating bouquet of red currant, almond and cedarwood, with a delicate hint of vanilla. Its full fruitiness and velvety body lead to a long, spicy finish. This powerful wine makes the ideal companion to flavourful beef, lamb, venison and game dishes as well as soft white cheeses.

in the vineyard : The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes came from vineyards planted in 1990. The vineyards are situated on the lower parts of the farm. The Cabernet Franc grapes came from slopes facing north and north west. The yield of these grapes were restricted deliberately which resulted in an intense Cabernet Franc character. The Merlot vineyards are situated on the lower parts of the farm and were established in decomposed granite. The Shiraz grapes came from very old vines – the vineyard was planted in 1973.

about the harvest: The grapes were picked by hand.

in the cellar : The grapes were fermented in steel tanks at about 28° C and the juice was left on the skins for 2 weeks. After fermentation the wine was matured in small new and second-fill French oak barrels for 18 months.
