Bright and enticing, this deep ruby red wine has an abundance of spice on the nose – lots of black and white pepper with hints of dark chocolate and rich fruit cake. The palate has plenty of black plummy fruit with some prunes, smoked meats and mulberry notes, all wrapped up in silky tannins with smoky spicy oak discreetly in the background.
A charcuterie platter of free-range meats would be just the thing to pair with this wine
in the vineyard : As a direct descendant of Martin Melck (who bought this gracious wine farm for his daughter in 1763), Ronnie fulfilled a lifelong dream by buying Muratie in 1987 - finally welcoming it back into the Melck fold and rekindling a century's old love affair with the farm. With his legendary palate, warm personality and instinctive flair for wine making, Ronnie is the only owner whose remains rest on Muratie, on the highest part of the farm - under the trees.
The Ronnie Melck Shiraz with its intense violet edge, sweet spiciness and floral and berry notes, pays tribute to the legendary winemaker - humble, honest and full of integrity. Matured in new and second fill barrels, this wine is lovely on release but will reach its full potential five to eight years later.
The Muratie Shiraz is made from three different vineyards on the estate. The oldest block was planted in 1975. The other two blocks were planted in 1994 and 1998. All three blocks are Northwest facing and the elevation varies from 260m to 280m above sea level. The vineyards are all dryland vineyards and the deep rich Table mountain sandstone soils are exceptionally suited to produce concentrated berries.
