This highly unusual wine is a little known varietal wine in South Africa although it is more frequently being used as a blender in the big Cape medoc style blends. Very similar in style to a Cabernet Sauvignon grape this variety was originally planted in Bordeaux as an insurance policy against early winter rains or frost. The Cabernet Franc grapes are harvested early and can be in the tank and blended with the other Bordeaux varieties even if the Cabernet or Merlot crop is not as big as expected.
