Muratie Shiraz 2006

2008 Michelangelo International Awards - Silver Medal
The wine is a deep intense red with a slight violet edge. Hedonistic deep berry fruit on the nose. Integrated spicy and smokiness surround the fruit beautifully. The palate shows huge amounts of ripe tannins which structure the wine and compliment the fruit. This adds a delicate balance which gives the wine longevity in the aftertaste.

ageing : A wonderful wine now and will improve for the next 8 - 10 years.

in the vineyard : The Muratie Shiraz is made from three different vineyards on the estate. The oldest block was planted in 1975. The other two blocks were planted in 1994 and 1998 respectively.

The old bock still has the traditional Perold trellising system whereas the newer plantings have the Smart trellising system.
All three blocks are Northwest facing and the elevation varies from 280m to 260m above sea level. The vineyards are all dryland vineyards and the deep rich Table Mountain sandstone soils are exceptionally suited to produce concentrated berries.

about the harvest: The vineyards yield approximately 6 tons per hectare. The grapes are handpicked at optimum ripeness.

in the cellar :

The grapes were gently crushed and destalked. The wine is made in traditional open fermenters which enable plunging and pumpovers to be done with ease. The wine is matured in 85% French oak and 15% American oak barrels.
