Simonsig Adelberg Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2009

Vibrant Persian carpet red with a youthful tinge in the rim. Ripe blackberry and raspberry fruit aromas with a delicious spicy vanilla backdrop. Unmistakable Cabernet lead pencil flavours are rounded by the succulent sweet and smooth Merlot influence. Silky soft tannins make the Adelberg velvety smooth and easy to drink.

Best with bredies, potjiekos, and a good old South African braai.

ageing : Ready to drink now but could age for a further 3 to 5 years.

in the vineyard : Simonsig Adelberg has been part of the Simonsig range since the early seventies when the blend contained mostly Pinotage and some Cabernet and Shiraz. In 1998 the blend was changed to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in an easy drinking Bordeaux style blend. In 2006 the packaging was modernised and the label was put back firmly in the Simonsig stable. In keeping with the latest trends in the world of wine Adelberg is now sealed with a beautifully designed screw cap to eliminate cork taint and seal in all the quality straight from the vineyard.

Temperatures during the growing season and the harvest period were higher than normal. It will be remembered as one of the warmer seasons, very much like 2000, which produced fabulously rich red wines with firm tannin structures and great maturation potential. Rainfall figures indicate that this was one of the driest summers in years. The winter rainfall was relatively low and erratic and relatively warm conditions were experienced. Chardonnay experienced uneven budding due to the warm winter. All the other grape varieties had good budbreak, which was followed by uneven shoot growth in some of the reds like Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot.

about the harvest: Meticulous green harvesting at veraison had to be done to remove the uneven bunches to ensure even ripeness at harvest. The Cabernet vineyards planted over the last few years are reaching maturity and balance. This means the quality is improving every year. Cooler fermentation and soft extraction techniques were used to make intensely fruity Cabernet with soft tannin.
