Kleine Zalze Family Reserve Shiraz 2013

The wine is typical of the vintage and has a dense bouquet of dark fruit and hints of spice. This opens up to a rich palate of blackberry fruit with savory undertones, nicely framed by a svelte tannin structure and a long finish.

ageing : Despite the elegance of this wine it will still reward careful cellaring for up to 10 years.

in the vineyard : Grapes were harvested from two blocks on our Groote Zalze farm. Each block contributing its own, unique character to this wine. A relatively wet winter was followed by a warm and mostly dry summer. There was one significant rainfall in early February which ensured the grapes reached full physiological ripeness without any stress. Intense canopy management during the first part of the growing season included leaf breaking in the bunch zone. Open canopy ensured even ripening and stable colour. Green harvest was done at 80% veraison.

about the harvest: Grapes were hand harvested early in the morning.

in the cellar : The grapes were de-stemmed and sorted before being transferred to stainless steel tank for fermentation. The perfect structure in the wine was achieved through a combination of open and closed pump overs and careful monitoring to ensure the best balance possible. Maturation took place for 24 months in 70% new French oak barrels.
