Morgenster Nabucco 2015

Colour: Bright red with a see-through garnet middle, lighter toward the edges.
Nose: Intriguingly different from typical red wine encounters. It promotes spice and flavours of the earth, and offers herbaceous intensity of lilac, thyme, lavender and basil flower and the spicy sweetness of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove.
Palate: Flavours are complex, lingering and enticing, put together with sweet strawberry, pomegranate and a cherry acidity zing. Tannins abound and form the tactile aspect to a thought provoking experience.

Fragrantly superb on its own, this wine also pairs well with food like a prime cut of beef accompanied by a rich sauce. It complements mature cheeses, dark cacao chocolate and something sweet.

A certified “Single vineyard wine”, Morgenster Nabucco 2015 was made in the Italian manner from the 12th crop of imported Italian clones in the Estate’s 1.6 ha. Nebbiolo vineyard.

Owner Giulio Bertrand’s passion and investment in making great Italian wines on Morgenster continue, with Morgenster Nabucco 2015 once again delivering the gravitas normally associated with international Nebbiolo. As there are not many Nebbiolo wines made in South Africa, those made on Morgenster are seen as a benchmark by many.

Cellar master Henry Kotzé says this deeply nuanced wine will still offer much pleasure in 20 years’ time.

in the vineyard : This was the earliest start to any season in more than 40 years. Budding was earlier, so too were flowering and grape set caused by a warmer November and December. It was also quite dry, with November 2014 being the last nice wet spell. What seemed like an unpredictable harvest delivered good surprises with the 2015 wines showing great quality.

in the cellar : 18 months maturation period, with 20% in new tight grain French oak Demi-Muids and the rest in third fill barrels.
Bottling took place on 10 August 2017.
