in the vineyard : Vintage 2011 could best be described as a lean vintage. This crop from the Kaaimansgat vineyard was very slight with small bunches which offered concentrated juice and promised a resulting wine of great intensity and sustained depth of flavour. The soils of the Elands Kloof valley are clay based and their lack of irrigation ensures a unique opportunity expressed in a wonderful mineral rich wine with excellent purity of fruit and long natural acid balance.

in the cellar : This in contrast to the traditional style of barrel fermented Chardonnay's where influence of French Oak add nutty vanilla tones to create wines of added weight and complexity. To achieve palate performance on this wine the first priority was to capture excellent fruit. Added character was achieved by leaving the wine on its primary lees for a number of months to gain flavours from the natural bed of original yeast.
