Dark purple, nearly black in colour with a garnet edge. Cherry and ripe plum fruit with a touch of spiciness and pepper on the nose, giving a complex aromatic profile. Plenty of rich plum fruit, subtle vanilla oaking, well managed tannins with elegant lasting length.

ageing : Well structured elegant wine that will continue to develop for the next 8 to 12 years.

in the vineyard : The wine is made from a combination of 23 year old vines grown on a single wire trellis system and a promising young block of Shiraz vines. The soil is sandy over a deep yellow clay base, restricting yield naturally, thus providing good quality grapes that ripen easily without loosing too much of their natural acid. Irrigation is supplied in very dry summers, thus enabling the grapes to ripe easily without placing undue stress on the vines. 8% Shiraz of the 1998 vintage added from a young, very promising vineyard.

about the harvest: The grapes were harvested on the 05/03/1999 at 24-25.4º Balling.

in the cellar : The wine underwent maturation in 80% 1st fill French barrels and 20% 2nd fill barrels for 18 months. The wine was bottled on 02/05/2001.
