Groot Constantia Gouverneurs Reserve 1986

The most famous wines ever made in the Cape were produced at Constantia in the 18th and 19th centuries on portions of land established by Simon van der Stel. As a tribute to Constantia’s original winemaker Groot Constantia named their flagship red wine the “Gouverneurs Reserve”.

The first release of this flagship wine was in July 1990. The Gouverneurs Reserve is always matured in new French Oak. This classic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from the Groot Constantia vineyard was matured for 20 months in new 500 litre French Oak barrels. It resulted in a very fruity and well structured wine to bring fame to the cellar.

The wine was made by Piet du Toit, who died at the young age of 40, having never been sick in his life. Martin Moore had to keep up the tradition as every year up to the 1993 vintage we have received either Gold or Double Gold in the Veritas Awards.
