Muratie Ansela 2001

This wine is named after Ansela van de Caab, a child born into slavery. In 1699 the governor of the Cape granted a piece of land to a German, Lourens Campher. He married Ansela after she was freed and together they built a humble house, which still exists, and they planted the first vines on Muratie.
Deep ruby red colour. Wonderful combination of berry fruit, chocolate and spices on the nose surrounded by hints of cedar and cigar box aromas. The palate is full and structured well balanced acid and tannins giving the wine incredible length and power.

in the cellar : Muratie Ansela van de Caab represents the pick of the crop of each vintage. The blend may vary from vintage to vintage but the major components to the blend will always be Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Franc. The percentage of each cultivar rests on the winemaker and a panel of invited wine tasters.

Each cultivar was made separately and matured in French and a few American oak barrels. (35% first fill barrels). The wine was kept in barrels for 12 months, blended and bottled. A further year of bottle maturation was allowed. The wine has been made as naturally as possible so do not be surprised if you do see a little bit of sediment in the bottle. The wine is terroir driven and should give you all that the Simonsberg was has to offer.
