Bouchard Finlayson Hannibal 2012

Showing both power and finesse it gives way to gentle flavours of black cherry, spice and strawberry. While very approachable at an early age it will mature handsomely over many years ahead!

My best description of Hannibal 2011 is that it is the kind of wine which one pulls the cork on while cooking only to discover the bottle is empty before sitting down to dinner. It is perfectly elegant with sufficient 'leather' in its taste profile – a reminder of its Italian links.

The birth of Hannibal extends back in time to our importation of the first Sangiovese and Nebbilo plant material into SA in 1989. These imports experienced twelve years in the development process, first from cuttings and expansion of plant material to the final realisation of the first bottled wine which was released in Dec 2001. Hannibal stands alone by its design and presentation as an individualistic blend of classic Italian and French varieties. In short the name portrays the link between France and Italy with Hannibal the conqueror's symbolism of the elephants crossing the Alps (as Africa's association of origin and connection to this wine). Worldly recognized and respected for its commanding taste profile, which is best described as a symphony of flavours. It is both bold and complex with notable back-palate structure while it's collection of different varieties present a harmonious flavour balance. The colour is marvellously crimson and bright

in the vineyard : The excitement of the Hannibal blend lies in the indulgence of pitching French and Italian grape varieties together. Arguably the world’s best varieties with Sangiovese established as the principle cultivar (52%) in this mix.

in the cellar : All Barrel matured for sixteen months after fermenting the different grapes separately. This vintage comprises Sangiovese 52%, Pinot noir 13%, Shiraz 13%, Mouvedre 13%, Nebbiolo 6% and Barbera 4%.
